Technical Information and Support

System Requirements for Online Courses - Please Note!
Our online courses are developed to run properly on the following systems*:

· Microsoft Windows 98 or later, running:
      - Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0+ (8.0+ recommended)
      - Mozilla Firefox 1.5+
      - Opera 9.0+
      - Google Chrome

· Mac OSX 10.4+, running:
      - Safari 2.0+
      - Mozilla Firefox 1.5+

Your system must allow javascript and Adobe Flash Player to operate.
Note for tablet users: Currently, Apple® mobile devices such as iPad® DO NOT SUPPORT FLASH. However, Android® platform devices can support Flash content, and it is therefore possible to access our courses using Android® devices. Due to the range of devices, we are only able to offer limited technical support for mobile devices at this time.

We also suggest the following minimum equipment:
    · Sound card and speakers/headphones
    · 56K modem or faster

* Online courses may work on other operating systems and other web browsers; however, due to the wide range of possibilities, we are unable to offer technical support for them.

Due to their small screen size and other limitations, we do NOT recommend accessing our online courses using a mobile hand-held device such as a smart phone.

Getting Started

  1. Click the Log In button at the top right corner of the Rockwell home page.
  2. Enter your user number and password (remember, passwords are case sensitive).
  3. At your Welcome Page, click on your course title to begin.

Course Information: The first time you open your course, a "Before you get started" page appears. This page contains important information about the functionality of your course. Read this page carefully before you click the "Click here to begin" button. The key points discussed on this page are:

  • Use the Back, Replay, and Next buttons located in the bottom right corner of your course window to navigate through the course. (Do not use the Back or Next buttons that appear on the top of the Internet browser.)
  • Click on the Course Navigator button to jump to various topics or exercises in the course. Click on the Course Navigator button to jump to various topics or exercises in the course.
  • Click the Main Menu button to log off the course properly.
  • All quizzes are timed and your session will expire after 40 minutes.
  • Final exams are timed. The time limit includes both the time you take to complete the exam and the time you spend reviewing the exam. Watch the clock that appears in the exam interface to see how much time you have left on each attempt.
  • Normal courses must be completed within six months from the date you enroll. Time limits for community college courses are dictated by each college.
  • If you do not navigate in your course (click the Next or Back button) for 15 minutes, your session will expire and you will need to log into the course again.

Update the Adobe Flash Player on your computer.

This step is especially important if you are having problems getting the questions to appear in the course exercises or quizzes, getting zeros on quiz scores, or if you are not getting sound from our talking characters. If you are not getting sound from the talking characters, determine if your sound card is working. If it is, try updating your Flash player and turn off any Internet security software that might be blocking Flash.

Go to www.adobe.com.
If your version of Flash is very outdated, you will be prompted to install a new version of Adobe Flash Player.
Under Download Free Player, click on Adobe Flash Player.
Please note: IF YOU ARE PROMPTED TO ALSO INSTALL A YAHOO TOOLBAR, UNCHECK THIS FEATURE BEFORE INSTALLING FLASH PLAYER.
You do NOT want to install this feature, since it would prevent you from viewing Rockwell's course screens.

do not install Yahoo toolbar Rockwell Institute

Screen Shot: Installing Flash Player; UNCHECK the Yahoo! Toolbar option. Click on the "Install Now" button. When the box appears indicating that "Adobe Flash player Successfully Installed", your update is complete. Click START, SHUT DOWN, and then choose 'Restart.' Sometimes computers need a clean reboot in order for the latest updates to take effect.
If you're still having problems getting the questions to appear in the course exercises or quizzes, try giving the exercises or quizzes a few more seconds to load fully. On the far left, in the gray bar at the bottom of the course window, find the small icon that looks like a white sheet of paper with a blue 'e' on it. The text next to it must say 'Done' before you click the 'Start' button on the exercise or quiz. If the text says anything else, the page has not finished loading and the quiz questions will not appear.

  2. Click on the "Settings" tab at the top.
  3. Make sure your screen resolution is set at 800x600 or larger.
  4. Click on the "Advanced" button. Make sure your DPI setting is set to Normal 96 dpi. (Large font 120 dpi will not work properly with our course and will cause the text to run off the frame).

Internet Security Software

Internet security software and software that's designed to keep "pop-up" ads from opening while you're browsing the web may interfere with the functioning of the Rockwell courses, or even keep you from accessing the Rockwell Institute home page. For example, if you are getting a black screen when trying to view an online course frame, it's a good indication that your Internet security software is blocking our page. To be able to access all aspects of our online courses, you generally need to "disable," "exit," "quit," or "shut down" any pop-up stopper, internet security, or firewall software that runs on your computer. You may also choose to configure it to allow Rockwell as a trusted site. For more information on disabling and configuring security software and toolbars, consult the manufacturer's documentation.

If you are still experiencing problems, call Rockwell Tech Support at (800) 221-9347, or email us. Technical support is available free of charge, from 8:30AM to 5:00PM (Pacific) Monday through Friday.
